From Coal to Chaos: A Resident’s Plea for Sensible Utilities

Two years ago, the City Council/ Utility Board started tearing down a perfectly good, clean coal power plant.

What are your credentials, your education, that make you qualified as energy managers?

Once the plant was gone, you announced that you were also abandoning solar and wind generation as it was too expensive, not to mention very unreliable, costly to make, and uses much fossil fuel to manufacture.

A few months after that, you are suddenly interested, and announce you will pursue the new generation of nuclear power plants. When will we get ours? 10-15-20 years?

Now you’re facing the ridiculous mandate of having to tear down the other coal-fired electric plant in Colorado Springs…. It has to come down because of action from democrats in Denver by 2029!

And buying power from a third source is working well in California.

Does this all seem backwards? It should. Get what WE need FIRST, then make the choices of what to keep or not. Dad said, “Look before you leap.”

You folks have no clue what you are doing to us.

Today I got a flyer (paid for by my utility bill in part) on how to be energy-wise.

My generation grew up with “Keep America Beautiful” to managing energy.

I’ll do my laundry when I get a load. I’ve been setting my thermostat for decades all by myself. No, you can’t have control of my thermostat either. Everyone with an ounce of common sense uses small appliances. I’ll run the dishwasher when it’s full. I don’t have an electric vehicle, and most people don’t.

Utility companies are monopolies. They are allowed to operate as such. We can’t shop our natural gas, electric or water.

Utility companies have the mandate to provide power, consistently, at the lowest possible price.

Utility companies have a mandate to provide power, consistently, at the lowest possible price.

This was repeated as it is the main point of the letter.

You’re doing a piss poor job. You have no common sense. You are trying to manipulate our energy consumption. Manipulate us and how we live!

To anyone reading this letter, not on the City Council, remember these actions aren’t isolated. Council is doing this on many levels. Time to clean house!

REGISTER AND VOTE! Let’s show the rest of Colorado how it’s done!

  1. I totally agree with you sir. We need to publish the names of all the utilities board members for the last 20 years. And you will find they are still involved with our local government in some form or another. Lets vote them out so they don’t mismanage other city enterprises ie Olympic Museum, road dieting etc etc

  2. With you all the way, Dave. This coming total disaster was obvious from the very beginning. City council members who have no idea what is best for the Springs when it comes to utilities should not only be voted out but future members should be banned from voting on or deciding anything related to electricity, water, natural gas, streets, zoning or anything else they know virtually nothing about. Maybe we should just have citizen committees of truly qualified people handling things.

  3. I agree with Dave. We have lived here for over 30 years and our utility bill has doubled thanks to all of this pipe dream.

  4. We need a publicly elected utilities board and get city council out of the utilities business. We need to elect people who are steeped in utilities and the nuances with forward looking ability. You can’t expect newly elected council members to come up to speed on utilities in a short time. A former council member said it took him 3 years to understand the working of utilities. He was gone the election cycle. Remember, WE own CSU. Not the mayor, not city council. WE the people. WE do have a voice in the running of utilities.
